Face to face with the Merovingians

In the exhibition Riches from afar, Museum Kasteel Wijchen takes you on a journey through the early Middle Ages. Extensive trade networks of colourful beads, beautiful pins, gold coins and rare utensils were created. These valuables came from thousands of kilometres away, to farming communities such as the recently discovered Wijchen settlement. Who were these Merovingians and, above all, how did they obtain such riches from afar? Gemstones from India, amber from the Baltic Sea and amethyst from the Mediterranean were brought here.
